Shenandoah Pawpaw is a patented variety known for producing some of the largest and most flavorful pawpaw fruits, reaching up to 1 lb. Ripening mid-season, the fruit features sweet, creamy-yellow flesh with a custard-like texture. Native to eastern North America, pawpaws (Asimina triloba) are the only temperate-adapted members of the custard apple family, related to tropical fruits such as cherimoya and soursop. The 3″–6″ greenish-yellow fruit offers a unique combination of banana-like sweetness and creamy consistency, along with high protein content and valuable vitamins and minerals. Despite its tropical appearance, the tree is cold hardy to zone 5, slow growing, pest resistant, and displays striking bright yellow foliage in fall. As North America’s largest native fruit, pawpaws were historically important in Indigenous diets and are gaining renewed interest with superior large-fruited cultivars.
