Purple Spruce is a tall, needled evergreen tree endemic to western China where it is found on north-facing, mountain slopes. Mature trees will reach 50-150' tall and 20-50' wide with a narrow, conical or pyramidal growth habit. Growth rate is moderate at about 12-15" per year. The long, dark green needles are radially arranged on densely pubescent branchlets. Showy seed cones emerge in spring at the ends of the branchlets. They are cylindric-ovoid or ellipsoid in shape, and are reddish-purple to violet-purple in color, maturing to brown.
