This low-growing herbaceous plant reaches 12–40 cm in height and spreads via rhizomes to create naturalistic ground cover. Its distinctive whorled foliage displays broad, heart-shaped leaflets with delicately scalloped margins. Delicate white star-shaped flowers emerge from March through June, clustered on central spikes, followed by small berry-like fruits that attract wildlife. The dried leaves release a characteristic vanilla-like fragrance, making this species both visually striking and sensory-rich for shade gardens and native plant landscapes.
